Notes from FDA call on Friday afternoon, March 23, 2007
Dr. Steve Sundlof, Mike Rodgers (Kansas City) spoke to a closed group of reporters. This is what we have been able to garner from subsequent communications. We will forward to you any resources that will allow you to hear the call.
FDA is continuing to investigate the Menu Foods recall. At this time they cannot confirm any ingredient as the source.
Menu Foods has expanded its recall to all of the products listed to include all dates. This occurred because of the confusion over what date productions should be recalled. This is the same list of products but now all affected products are recalled regardless of production date.
Dr. Sundlof said that FDA's oversight for pet food is the same as for human food, and all animal food is regulated by FDA. He also said that the same people who inspected FDA facilities also inspect pet food facilities.
Sundlof also said that he didn't believe that any dry pet food is implicated.
There was no info given on who the broker of any wheat gluten might be.
FDA has tracked shipments of the wheat gluten under consideration as a source only to pet food production; but they cannot rule out whether or not that it was shipped for human food production.
The New York lab analyzed only the "entire" pet foods at their lab, and did not test individual ingredients. Wheat Gluten is a likely source, but none have been ruled out.
The "sabotage" question came up, and was not ruled out.
Dr. Sundlof said, "If the [pet food] product is not subject to the recall, they [pet owners] should feel confident feeding those products.Pet owner should continue to buy products outside the recall."
