I. Safe Ingredients in NUTRO® Products
Nutro ensures that only high quality ingredients go into the pet food we make. We procure ingredients only from qualified suppliers, many of whom we have worked with for over a decade.
- Ingredient Sourcing
- Suppliers and co-manufacturers must document the source and country of origin of all raw materials purchased for use in NUTRO® products.
- Ingredient Testing
- Our quality assurance personnel must qualify suppliers and co-manufacturers and their ingredients tested, before they can become approved for use in NUTRO® products.
- Compliance Checks
- Once raw materials arrive at a Nutro Products facility, we conduct tests to check for quality, safety, and consistency.
- Adhering to Standards
- Nutro Products’ testing of raw materials conforms to standards set by the USDA and AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials).
II. NUTRO® Products Safe Manufacturing
Nutro Products maintains state-of-the-art company-owned dry kibble manufacturing facilities so we can closely monitor and inspect at virtually every step of preparation of NUTRO® products.
- In-Process Checks
- Processing equipment is closely monitored to ensure that systems and settings are running in control and without failure. Particle sizes are checked for proper ingredient grinding. Solid and liquid materials are weighed and metered to ensure correct formula assembly, and processed within temperature specifications.
- System Checks
- Product attributes such as density, expansion, and moisture are checked and reviewed during production.
- Qualification Standards
- Co-manufacturers, including those making Nutro Products’ cans and pouches, must adhere to approved quality, safety, and testing standards in order to be qualified for NUTRO® products.
III. Finished NUTRO® Product Testing
Finished NUTRO® products go through additional testing to ensure high quality and compliance to safety standards.
- Testing
- We conduct both in-house and independent tests for microbiological safety and toxin screening, including independent lab tests for melamine.
- Key Nutrient Testing
- Every lot of food is tested for key nutrients to verify that product design criteria are met including product shelf-life requirements.
- Guaranteed Performance
- Product oxidative stability and package integrity are confirmed to help ensure product performance.
IV. Final NUTRO® Product Verification
Verification testing validates that products conform to specifications, formulas, and design.
- Co-Manufacturers (including those making Nutro Products’ cans and pouches)
- NUTRO® products that are produced at qualified co-manufacturers are also tested for melamine.

- Consumers can feel confident that NUTRO® products meet the strict requirements of the U.S. Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
